Sint Eustatius Island Council Delegation Participates in Meetings and Bonaire Day Activities
ORANJESTAD, ST. EUSTATIUS - 9 September 2026 — Members of the Island Council of Sint Eustatius travelled to Bonaire to participate in a series of meetings and official activities, including the BES Summit, the opening of Bonaire’s Island Council year, and the Bonaire Day celebrations. The delegation consisted of Island Council members Glenville Schmidt, Mercedes Lopes-Spanner and Clyde Van Putten, accompanied by Island Registrar Melissa Robins-Spanner.
BES Summit – September 4
On September 4, the delegation attended the BES Summit, where representatives of the Island Councils of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba came together to discuss shared issues, concerns and priorities affecting the three islands. During the BES Summit held in June, the chairmanship was transferred from Bonaire to Sint Eustatius. Island Council member Glenville Schmidt was subsequently re-elected by the Island Council of Sint Eustatius to continue serving as Chairman during Sint Eustatius’ term. The September meeting provided another opportunity for the three Island Councils to continue their joint discussions and cooperation on matters of common interest.
Opening of the Island Council Year – September 5
On September 5, the delegation attended the official opening of Bonaire’s Island Council year. The meeting included speeches from the different political factions and a moment of reflection, during which members viewed a video featuring commentary, perspectives and advice from members of the Bonaire community.
Reunion Solemn and Bonaire Day – September 6
On September 6, the delegation attended the Reunion Solemn at the Island Council Hall of Bonaire, followed by the official Bonaire Day Ceremony at Wilhelmina Plein. The activities provided an opportunity to join the people and representatives of Bonaire in commemorating Bonaire Day and celebrating the island’s culture and community.
Bilateral Meeting – September 7
The visit concluded on September 7 with a bilateral meeting between representatives of the Island Councils of Sint Eustatius and Bonaire. During the meeting, the parties finalized discussions on the joint cooperation arrangement between Bonaire and Sint Eustatius. With these discussions concluded, the process will now move forward towards formal consideration and approval.
