Governor's Speech: Strengthening Your Civic Voice Course - 25 May 2026
Good evening to everyone present,
As Island Governor, it is an honor and privilege for me to officially launch this important initiative, the course Strengthening Your Civic Voice. I would like to begin by thanking each of you for making the decision to be here this evening.
The launch of this course represents more than just the beginning of a three-day program. It marks another important milestone for us as a government and as the people of Statia. It reflects our shared commitment to strengthening civic awareness, encouraging participation, and building a stronger future for our island together.
The aim of this course is to help you, as citizens of Statia, gain a deeper understanding of our government structure, how our systems work, and how each of you can influence decision-making.
At a time when many people feel disconnected from public life or uncertain whether their voices truly matter, your presence here tonight sends a different message. It says that you believe participation still matters. It says that you believe communities become stronger when citizens are informed, engaged, and willing to contribute. That belief is essential to democracy.
Too often, people think civic engagement begins and ends with elections. Yes, voting is important, but using your civic voice is much broader than that. It is the courage to ask questions. It is the willingness to listen carefully to people whose experiences differ from our own. It is volunteering, organizing, attending community meetings, mentoring young people, advocating for fairness, and working together to solve problems.
A healthy Statia community depends not only on the leaders in government, but also on citizens who care enough to participate.
Throughout history, many of the changes that improved communities did not begin in government buildings. They began with ordinary people who chose not to remain silent, people who spoke up about education, healthcare, public safety, environmental protection, equal opportunity, and the future they wanted for their families and neighbors.
Progress has always depended on citizens who believed their voices could make a difference. That is why this course matters.
You are not simply learning how to speak. You are learning how to engage constructively, think critically, communicate effectively, and participate responsibly in civic life. These are skills that strengthen communities and help democracies endure.
Strong communities are not built by people who all think the same way. They are built by people who remain committed to one another even when they disagree.
I would especially like to address the students present here this evening. Never underestimate the value of your perspective. You do not need a title, years of experience, or political influence to contribute meaningfully to your community. Some of the most important ideas come from those who are willing to see problems differently and ask questions others may overlook.
Your voice matters now! Not someday in the future, But today!
As Governor, I can tell you that good leadership depends on engaged citizens. Government works best when communities are informed, involved, and willing to participate in shaping solutions together.
So, I encourage each of you to make full use of this opportunity. Learn all that you can. Challenge yourselves. Speak with confidence but also listen with humility. Build bridges where others build walls. And remember that civic participation is not reserved for a select few, it belongs to all of us.
The strength of democracy is not measured only by its institutions. It is measured by the willingness of its people to engage, contribute, and care for the common good.
In closing, I would like to mention that, even if you are still undecided about how, you will use the knowledge gained from this course, at the very least you will become more informed citizens. Informed citizens are essential to a strong and healthy democracy, and a healthy democracy is not built by spectators; it is built by participants, people like you, who have chosen to take this important step toward greater civic involvement and community engagement.
Thank you for stepping forward. Thank you for choosing participation over silence. And thank you for helping to strengthen the civic life of our community.
I wish you great success in this course and in the leadership journey ahead.
Thank you, and may God bless you all.
