Democracy Academy Sint Eustatius Encourages Civic Engagement and Democratic Participation

Sint Eustatius, 23 October 2026 - The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office of the Island Council of Sint Eustatius, successfully hosted the Democracy Academy Sint Eustatius from 20 to 22 October 2026 at the Christine & William Flanders Community Centre. The three-day initiative was officially opened by Island Governor Alida Francis, who delivered welcoming remarks to participants. In her address, the Island Governor emphasized the importance of residents taking the initiative to broaden their knowledge and become actively involved in their community. Her remarks recognized the willingness of participants to invest their time in learning more about democracy and the role they can play in contributing to the development of Sint Eustatius. The Democracy Academy aimed to strengthen democratic awareness, encourage active civic participation, and equip residents with valuable knowledge and practical skills to contribute meaningfully to the democratic processes and development of their island. Throughout the programme, participants explored various aspects of democracy, leadership, and effective representation. The sessions addressed important topics such as campaigning and getting elected, managing differences through dialogue and negotiation, and understanding the responsibilities associated with representing the interests of the community. Under the guidance of facilitators Mr. Kenville Kleinmoedig and Mr. Gwendel Mercelina, participants had the opportunity to exchange perspectives, engage in meaningful discussions, and reflect on the importance of constructive dialogue, accountability, and active citizenship within a democratic society.

Strengthening Democratic Participation on Sint Eustatius

The Democracy Academy forms part of broader efforts to promote civic awareness and encourage greater community involvement in democratic and decision-making processes.

Democracy extends beyond elections. It requires informed citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities, appreciate different perspectives, and are willing to contribute positively to the development of their communities.

By providing opportunities for learning, dialogue, and personal development, initiatives such as the Democracy Academy contribute to strengthening the foundations of local democracy and fostering a culture of meaningful participation.

The Registrar’s Office of the Island Council recognizes the importance of civic education in bringing democratic institutions closer to the people they serve. Encouraging residents to become informed, engaged, and confident in expressing their views remains essential to strengthening democratic participation on Sint Eustatius.

The Democracy Academy represents another step toward building a more informed and engaged community, where residents are encouraged to recognize the value of their voices and the role they can play in shaping the future of Sint Eustatius.

The Registrar’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to NIMD for its collaboration, Island Governor Alida Francis for officially opening the Academy, the NIMD facilitators Mr. Kenville Kleinmoedig, Mrs. Gracia Grande, Mrs. Salima Ahmadou, Mr. Gwendel Mercelina for sharing their knowledge and expertise, and all participants for their commitment, enthusiasm, and active engagement throughout the three-day programme.
