Island Council Projects Tour

On Thursday, 12 February, members of the Island Council joined Commissioner Leerdam's team and the PPMO department for a projects tour.
The purpose of the visits was to gain firsthand insight into the Government projects currently underway. From infrastructure improvements to community and youth-focused developments, Council members had the opportunity to see progress on the ground.
Experiencing these projects up close strengthens informed decision-making and reaffirms the Council's commitment to accountable governance as we continue building a stronger, more resilient Statia.

Civic Education Gwendoline van Putten School (Part B)
The Registrar's Office recently continued its commitment to strengthening democratic awareness through Civic Education Part B at the Gwendoline van Putten School. Both sessions combined discussion and interactive role-play, giving students practical exposure to how the Island Council functions.
Students explored how motions and amendments are introduced, how Council debates (meetings) are conducted. and how decisions translate into action for the people of Statia. Students had the opportunity to engage, ask questions and gain clarity on how governance works in practice, not just in theory.
The Programme was led daily by Council Advisor Ms. Marjani Humphreys and Administrative Worker Ms. Sje-Vaughn Fleming of the Registrar's Office, with support of Social Domain. Council Lady Raquel Spanner-Carty attended throughout the week, engaging directly with the students. On Friday, Island Governor Ms. Alida Francis and Commissioner Ms. Rechelline Leerdam were also present, underscoring the importance of civic engagement and youth participation.
Through initiatives like these, the Government continues to strengthen civic awareness and empower young people to engage meaningfully in the democratic process.
